The prosperity of the town is due to 14 thermal springs, whose healing effect was known already in the middle ages.

Carlsbad features 14 springs in total. the most famous and strongest spring is located in the White Colonnades and is named Vrídlo (gush). Vrídlo reaches a temperature of 72°C (160°f) and shoots up to 14 meters (42 ft.) high. In the past century, this water was consumed by the visitors in enormous amounts, nowadays the consumption of the thermal water is rather moderate. the laxative and purifying effect of this pleasantly salty tasting water is commonly used to aid holistic dietary programs and develops its abilities already after three cups per day.
